Ladies’ Power: Traits of Successful Women

There are so many ways to define success—whether it’s in fashion, family, finance, or something completely different. Even in 2017, women must work harder and push more in order to achieve these successes. If you need some inspiration and motivation, here are some traits and tricks of successful women to take note of.

Be assertive

To me, bossy is not a pejorative term at all. It means somebody’s passionate and engaged and ambitious and doesn’t mind learning.” –Amy Poehler

It is hard to assert yourself, especially in workplaces or situations that are male led and male dominated. But if there is something a women striving for success must learn, it is how to stand up for herself, the people around her, and what she believes in. This applies to believing in yourself and your own abilities. Approach people at networking events without hesitation, present yourself confidently in meetings and presentations, prove yourself and your abilities whenever you can, be strong and be assertive!

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it” –Maya Angelou

Part of asserting yourself, and of achieving success in general, involves taking risks. With risks comes making mistakes and accepting moments of failure or defeat. Moments of failure don’t make you a failure. A successful woman must not only be able to make mistakes, but to learn from them. Being proactive and productive means taking a mistake or failure and doing more than saying “I won’t do that again;” it involves asking yourself how you can use this moving forward.

Have a good support system

“Whenever you are blue or lonely or stricken by some humiliating thing you did, the cure and the hope is in caring about other people.”—Diane Sawyer

While independence is important, it’s also important to admit when you need help, love, and support. This can range from getting a business partner or reaching out for networking possibilities to having friends and family to vent to or celebrate with to people who will just be there for you at the end of a long week to wind down. Success can be so much sweeter when you have people to celebrate it with in whichever form that may take.

Never stop moving forward and setting new goals

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe”—Gail Devers

Success is about constantly resetting the bar for yourself and continuing to set goals and work to achieve them. Think of it as success being made up of a number of successes. These goals can be set in all aspects of life—professional, personal, emotional, physical. Once one is achieved, you take what you learned and have gained and apply it to setting and achieving another one. This not only opens you up to more possibilities and experiences, but creates a constant sense of movement, purpose, and accomplishment.
