Over the past few years, Mikael D’s name has been on everyone’s lips. This brand has successfully flourished under the creative direction of Mikael Derderian, Montreal-raised designer, whose brilliant craftsmanship is widely known and seen at red carpet events and galas. His dresses are not just elegant – they embody all femininity and beauty of female nature. It’s hand-worked details, highlighted feminine silhouettes and delicately styled looks that make Mikael D’s designs so special and loved by every woman. He presents the best of the world of glamour and imposes his own way of fashion creation.“My job is my life, my everything” Mikael says in the interview with Beyond Fashion Magazine after his show at Waterworks. It is clear that with his experience and innate sense of style, he was destined to be a designer. But thinking of another career choice (in case life had taken another turn), Mikael admits that he would probably be in cinematography. “I studied cinematography at University and I liked it” he says. As for the other hobbies – which he does not really have time for due to his work overload – his main one is photography. And considering his creative mindset, it is not surprising that he is drawn to the artistic pursuits. This year, Mikael D’s collection has surpassed all expectations. The dresses, inspired by “The Great Gatsby”, were so divine and flawless that you just wanted to have each of them in your wardrobe. The process of creating dresses is something that Mikael really loves. He pays attention to every detail and works on every image really hard to make it perfect and complete. His inspiration can come, he says, from the simplest of things. But as he masters the design to perfection, his garments become true masterpieces. His innovative mind and imagination can design and create a collection from scratch. After the first major success with Julia Roberts (for whom he made a dress in Lancôme “La vie est belle” perfume International Campaign) his “another proud moment was seeing his dresses in the windows in Paris”. Not every designer reaches that point where his work is showcased in the capital of fashion (sorry, Milan).
His advice to all young designers, trying to pursue their dreams, is to “work really hard, believe in yourself, as hard work always pays off”. And it’s true!
