Everybody wants to have perfectly white teeth, but not everyone knows what’s it like to get teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. Because most of us love coffee and red wine, we get stain buildups on our pearly whites that are hard to remove with a regular toothbrush. Though it’s an important aesthetic concern of most people, Dr. Arin Ratavosi from Riverside Dental, says that ‘lately, there has been a lot of attention put on the frame of a painting instead of the painting itself. Lips are like the frame to the smile which is the classic painting. A lot of patients are focusing on fillers for the lips, but are neglecting on investing in their smile. You first need to paint Mona Lisa before deciding on which frame to showcase it in’.
The good news is that nowadays we have many ways to whiten our teeth at home. One of the most effective ones is using Poladay whitening gel. We went to Riverside Dental to find out how it’s done, and here is what we learnt. First, they do impressions (molds) of your teeth and then, when the custom impression tray is ready (typically, in a few days), they give you a package of SDI Poladay + Polanight. The package comes with clear instructions on how to use the whitening gel, how long to wear it for, and how often to do the treatment. For example, with 9.5% hydrogen peroxide, you should only use it twice a day for 15 minutes or once a day for 30 minutes. At these concentrations, the hydrogen peroxide can penetrate microscopic holes and fissures in your enamel to remove stains. If your teeth feel sensitive, it is recommended to wait for 1-2 days before next application.
Step by step on how to do it:
1. Place a small drop of gel into every compartment of the tray for the teeth undergoing treatment.
2. Seat the tray, with the gel, around the teeth.
3. Wipe away excess gel in mouth with a tissue or dry soft brush.
4. After treatment, remove tray. Rinse tray and mouth with lukewarm water.
5. Brush teeth.
It is strongly recommended to stay away from food and drinks with strong pigmentation (like carrots, sangria, chocolate) for a minimum of 48 hours after you whiten and even longer, if possible. The results are already noticeable after the first application, and will last longer, if you take a good care of your teeth (ex: drinking coffee with a straw).
